Bipolarity

Updated: Aug 5, 2021

Bipolarity is very misunderstood in the Moroccan culture. It is seen as a possession by the demon, a rebellious attitude, or worst, just an incurable mental disease that cannot be treated.

What is bipolar disorder? (Formally named manic-depressive illness or manic depression)

It is a mental disease characterized by abnormal changes in mood, energy, activity level, focus, and capacity to carry out daily chores.

What are the types of bipolar disorders?

Bipolar disorder is classified into three categories. All three categories are characterized by noticeable changes in mood, energy, and activity levels. These moods range from excessively “up,” exhilarated, irritated, or energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to excessively “down,” sad, indifferent, or hopeless conduct (known as depressive episodes).

A- Bipolar I Disorder:

Manic episodes that persist at least 7 days, or manic symptoms that are so severe that the person requires immediate hospital care, are considered manic. Depressive episodes are common and usually last at least two weeks. Depressive episodes with mixed features (having both depressive and manic symptoms at the same time) are also possible.

B- Bipolar II Disorder

Idiopathic bipolar II disorder (commonly known as "bipolar two") is a type of mental illness. Bipolar II disorder is similar to bipolar I condition in that moods fluctuate between high and low over time. The "up" moods in bipolar II disorder, on the other hand, never reach full-blown mania.

C- Cyclothymic Disorder (also called Cyclothymia)

Characterized by periods of hypomanic symptoms as well as bouts of depressive symptoms that persist at least two years (1 year in children and adolescents). The symptoms, however, do not match the diagnostic criteria for a hypomanic or depressed episode.

What are the signs of bipolar disorder?

Bipolar illness symptoms in children and adolescents can be difficult to recognize. It's often difficult to know if these are normal ups and downs, the result of stress or trauma, or symptoms of a mental health disease other than bipolar disorder.

Children and teenagers may experience discrete significant depressive, manic, or hypomanic episodes, but the pattern may differ from that of adults with bipolar disorder.

Moods might also fluctuate quickly during episodes. Some youngsters may experience periods of no mood symptoms in between episodes. The most prominent signs of bipolar disorder in children and teenagers may include severe mood swings that are different from their usual mood swings.

What is the cure for Bipolar disease?

Many people, including those with the most severe forms of bipolar disease, can benefit from treatment. A successful treatment approach typically comprises a combination of medicine and psychotherapy, sometimes known as "talk therapy."

Bipolar disorder is a chronic illness that lasts a lifetime. Manic and depressive episodes usually recur over time. Many patients with bipolar disorder are free of mood swings between episodes.
