Barça hits rock bottom

FC Barcelona has been relegated from the Champions League today in the sixth round for the fifth group matches, after being defeated 3-0 by Bayern Munich. Which also saw Benfica win 2-0 at its Ukrainian guest, Dynamo Kiev.

On the eve of the match, Julian Nagelsmann had warned that his team would play the shot thoroughly. The German manager kept his word by fielding an ultra-attacking team, with the Sané-Müller-Musiala-Coman quartet behind the inevitable Robert Lewandowski. Barça had come to play against them, with Xavi choosing the quick Serginho Dest and Ousmane Dembélé to surround Memphis Depay.

Bayern's Thomas Muller scored the first goal in the 34th minute, while Leroy Sane added the second goal in the 43rd minute. Jamal Musiyala, the rising star, scored the third goal in the 62nd minute.

Despite Bayern's big performance, it was won with little work in a match played without an audience, after its players competed in missing several simple chances during the two halves of the contest.

Bayern increased its score to 18 points at the top of the group after winning all six of its matches in the group stage, putting it 10 points ahead of its nearest opponents Benfica, who accompanied it to the quarter-finals, while Barcelona's balance remained at 7 points in third place. With one point, Dynamo Kiev stayed at the bottom of the table.

For the first time in almost 20 years (2000-2001), the Blaugranas are eliminated from the group stage, and this rejection comes to sanction a disastrous run, unworthy of the club, with only 2 goals scored and 9 goals surrendered in six games. Barça will now compete in the Europa League, the European second level, from now on. That's a reasonable assumption.
